Location: > EN > Frequently Asked Questions >Severe wildfires in southern Europe are a reminder that heat, drought, low humidity and strong winds can turn a small ignition source into a fast-moving emergency. An incompletely extinguished match, a lighter left in a hot vehicle, barbecue embers or misused lighting fluid can all become dangerous under the wrong conditions.
The cause of any individual wildfire must be determined by the competent authorities. This article does not attribute a reported fire to a particular product or person. It explains the shared hazards of outdoor ignition products and how an SDS can support prevention.
Why do wildfires spread so quickly?
Two questions should be separated: what ignited the first fuel, and what allowed the fire to spread. Prolonged heat and drought dry vegetation; wind carries embers; slopes accelerate uphill fire spread; and dry lightning may provide a natural ignition source. Human sources include cigarettes, matches, campfires, grills, liquid firelighters, hot machinery, welding and the use of flame during a fire ban.
Common barbecue and outdoor ignition products
Matches
A used match may remain hot after the visible flame has gone out. Put it in a non-combustible container and confirm that it is completely cold before disposal.
Butane lighters and refill canisters
Disposable lighters commonly contain liquefied butane or a similar fuel. Leakage can create a highly flammable vapour cloud, while a heated pressurised container may rupture. Do not leave lighters in a vehicle, beside a grill or in direct sunlight.
Liquid firelighters
These products may contain hydrocarbons, alcohols or other combustible ingredients. Never pour liquid onto a flame, glowing charcoal or a hot grill. Flashback can travel through the vapour to the container and cause a fireball or serious burns.
Solid blocks and gels
A stable appearance does not mean a product is non-flammable. Some fuels burn with a hard-to-see flame. Use only the recommended quantity and never mix them with unknown solvents or fuels.
Charcoal and ash
Charcoal can smoulder for hours and produces carbon monoxide. Never use a charcoal grill in a tent, vehicle, enclosed balcony or poorly ventilated space. Douse, stir and douse again until all material is cold.
What should be checked in the SDS?
- Section 2: whether the product is a flammable gas, liquid, aerosol or gas under pressure.
- Section 5: suitable extinguishing media, hazardous combustion products and firefighter protection.
- Section 7: ignition control, ventilation, static precautions and storage temperature.
- Section 9: flash point, vapour pressure, auto-ignition temperature and explosive limits.
- Section 10: heat, sparks, flames, static electricity and incompatible materials to avoid.
- Sections 13 and 14: disposal and dangerous-goods transport information.
Do not use one generic SDS for every firelighter. Similar trade names can hide different compositions, flash points, container types and transport classifications.
Outdoor fire safety checklist
- Check local fire restrictions and closure notices before leaving.
- Cancel open-flame cooking during extreme heat, low humidity or strong wind.
- Use only approved locations away from dry grass and woodland.
- Keep fuel containers away from the flame and take only the amount needed.
- Prepare water, sand or an appropriate extinguisher before lighting.
- Never leave a fire unattended and keep children and animals away.
- Never add liquid firelighter to a flame or hot charcoal.
- Before leaving, extinguish, turn over and recheck every ember.
Supplier responsibilities
Suppliers should classify the actual formulation for the target market, align the label with SDS Sections 2 and 14, verify packaging and transport rules, give prominent heat and flashback warnings, and update documents when formulations, suppliers or regulations change.
