Cyanoacrylate adhesive can bond skin within seconds, while sodium hydroxide in drain cleaners can cause deep chemical burns. Both incidents show why labels and safety data sheets (SDSs) should be read before use, not only after an accident.

Why should bonded fingers never be pulled apart?
Many instant glues contain cyanoacrylates. Traces of moisture on the skin trigger rapid polymerisation. Pulling bonded fingers in opposite directions may tear the skin. A larger amount of adhesive can also react strongly with cotton or wool and release heat.
- Stop pulling and check whether the adhesive has reached the eyes, mouth, nose or a large area of skin.
- Soak the bonded area in warm soapy water and gently roll or peel the edges apart.
- Vegetable oil, mineral oil or petroleum jelly may help loosen the bond.
- Use acetone only with care. Keep it away from eyes, the mouth, damaged skin and sensitive areas.
- Seek medical attention for blistering, persistent pain, discolouration or extensive bonding.
Do not use knives or scissors, bite open the tube, or force an eyelid open. If adhesive enters the eye, rinse continuously with clean water and obtain medical advice.
Why is sodium hydroxide ingestion an emergency?
Caustic soda, or sodium hydroxide, is strongly corrosive. It can damage the lips, tongue, mouth, throat, oesophagus and stomach. The visible injury in the mouth does not reliably show the extent of internal damage.
- Spit out any residue and gently rinse the mouth with water. Do not swallow the rinse water.
- Do not induce vomiting. The corrosive substance can burn tissue again on the way back and may enter the airway.
- Do not try to neutralise the alkali with vinegar, lemon juice or another acid. The reaction may release heat.
- Do not give activated charcoal or home remedies unless a medical professional instructs you to do so.
- Seek urgent medical help and provide the product name, concentration, exposure time and estimated amount.
For skin exposure, carefully remove dry solids and contaminated clothing before rinsing with plenty of running water. Eye exposure requires immediate continuous irrigation and emergency assessment.
Five SDS sections worth knowing at home
- Section 2: corrosivity, irritation, flammability, acute toxicity and label elements.
- Section 4: first-aid measures for inhalation, skin, eye and ingestion exposure.
- Section 7: handling, ventilation, storage and segregation requirements.
- Section 8: suitable gloves, eye protection and other exposure controls.
- Section 10: incompatible materials and conditions that may cause a dangerous reaction.
Consumers should first follow the product label and instructions. Businesses purchasing or repacking industrial chemicals should also obtain a current SDS that matches the supplied product. A label gives rapid warnings; an SDS provides fuller technical information. Neither replaces the other.
Eight basic rules for safer homes
- Keep chemicals in their original, clearly labelled containers.
- Never identify a chemical by tasting or deliberately smelling it.
- Store products away from children, older people who may be confused, and pets.
- Follow the stated concentration and never assume that more product works better.
- Do not mix bleach, toilet cleaners, acidic descalers, ammonia cleaners or unknown products.
- Use suitable chemical-resistant gloves and eye protection where required, and keep the area ventilated.
- If repacking is unavoidable, use a compatible container and apply a complete label.
- Make sure everyone knows where chemicals and emergency washing facilities are located.
