Location: > EN > Frequently Asked Questions >A lighter may contain a flammable gas, a flammable liquid, a pressurised container or a lithium battery. Heat, impact, leakage or incorrect refilling can turn this small consumer product into a fire, flash-fire or rupture hazard.
Three common lighter types
Gas lighters
These commonly use n-butane, isobutane or an LPG mixture stored as a liquefied gas under pressure. Main hazards include highly flammable gas, vapour accumulation, cold burns from liquid fuel and pressure rise when heated.
Liquid-fuel lighters
These use refined petroleum-solvent fuels delivered to a wick. Composition, flash point and hazard classification vary by brand. Do not assume every product called “lighter fluid” has the same hazards.
Arc or electronic lighters
These use a lithium battery to create an electric arc or heat a coil. They avoid fuel leakage but introduce risks from short circuit, puncture, water ingress, overcharge and heat. Lithium-battery transport rules may apply.
Butane and petroleum fuel compared
- Butane: a liquefied gas under pressure; highly flammable; may rupture when heated; high concentrations can cause dizziness or asphyxiation; liquid contact can cause frostbite.
- Petroleum lighter fuel: a combustible or flammable liquid depending on the formulation and flash point; vapour may ignite; aspiration into the lungs can cause severe injury.
Explosive limits are not a safe/unsafe boundary. A small leak can create a locally flammable mixture in a confined or low-lying area.
How to read the fuel SDS
- Section 2: butane products may carry H220 and H280; liquid-fuel classification depends on the actual flash point and formulation.
- Sections 4-6: first aid for inhalation and cold burns, firefighting media and leak isolation.
- Section 7: separation from heat, sparks, static electricity and oxidisers.
- Sections 9 and 10: flash point, vapour pressure, explosive limits, vapour density and conditions to avoid.
- Section 14: gas-filled lighters are commonly associated with UN 1057, Class 2.1, but the classification must not be copied to every lighter or refill product. Liquid fuels and battery-powered products require separate assessment.
Safe use and refilling
- Keep lighters out of hot vehicles, direct sunlight and the area around grills and heaters.
- Do not crush, puncture, dismantle or burn the product.
- Refill only in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources.
- Use the correct fuel and connector and never overfill.
- After refilling, remove residues and allow vapour to disperse before ignition.
- Keep away from children, the face, hair, clothing and other combustibles.
- If there is a continuing odour, hissing or liquid leak, remove ignition sources and follow local fire-safety or waste instructions.
Checks for procurement and transport
Obtain the SDS for the specific model and fuel; assess finished lighters, refill fuel and batteries separately; verify anti-leakage and anti-short-circuit packaging; and align the label, Section 14, transport assessment and carrier declaration.
